Paddle to Muckleshoot 2023
WHAT WE DID
Since 1989, the Muckleshoot Tribe has organized an annual Canoe Journey to honor their ancestral connection to the waterways of the Pacific Northwest. Participants from as far away as Vancouver, Canada paddle to Seattle for a weeklong celebration of Indigenous culture.
In 2023 we partnered with the good folks at Groundswell to livestream the Tribe’s first post-COVID Canoe Journey. During the 5-hour stream our broadcast cameras captured more than 100 canoes arriving at Alki Beach, where they were ceremonially welcomed ashore by their Muckleshoot hosts. We loved this project for 3 main reasons:
We got to solve some fun technical puzzles. (Alki Beach isn’t your typical streaming environment.)
We flew a drone throughout the stream to capture the scale and beauty of the event from above.
We gained a deeper appreciation for the culture and traditions of our Indigenous neighbors.
